Is therapy confidential?

All our communications are subject to therapist-client confidentiality and governed by relevant privacy legislation such as GDPR. All information disclosed remains between us. Exceptions to this are:

  • All therapists operating ethically attend "supervision", where we discuss client work with a supervisor to ensure that we are working safely and to best effect. Details of the case may therefore be disclosed but all information is anonymous, identities are not disclosed.

  • In rare cases we may consult with your GP, for example where there is concern over your safety, however this would be discussed with you in advance where possible.

  • In extreme circumstances such as acts of terrorism we are required by law to break confidentiality, however for the majority of people this wouldn't be an issue!

What style of therapy do you offer?

I work from an integrative perspective, which means I incorporate the theories and tools from a range of western philosophies, including person-centered, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural techniques, as well as eastern approaches such as mindfulness and self-compassion.

Some clients have asked why I don't specialise in one area of therapy, and my view is that it is like a lot of other things we do in life - if you were gardening then you wouldn't use a spade to prune the roses, and if you were doing DIY you wouldn't try sawing wood with a screwdriver. You pick the tool that best meets the challenge of the task at hand.
In the same way, each client comes to therapy with their own unique needs and will require a tailored blend of tools and techniques to best support them.

What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

This is quite the can of worms and people have different views, but fundamentally there's not much difference at all! The terms are often used interchangeably.

How many sessions do I need?

This will vary from person-to-person dependent on your needs.

Most of my clients are open-ended contracts which will represent work done over a period of many months.

If you have time or cost restrictions then please let me know at our initial assessment meeting and we can look at a plan for focused, short-term work.

How long does each therapy session last?

Sessions last for 50 minutes as a standard duration. Some forms of therapy such as hypnotherapy may be longer.

How do I know who the right therapist for me is?

To a certain extent, the type of therapy offered is less important than your relationship with the therapist.
If it feels right and comfortable, they're probably the person you need.

If we decide on our initial meeting that your needs would be better met by another therapist or service then I'm happy to help you arrange that if needed, with referral or suggestions for where to seek alternative support.

Why "Tidy Marbles"?

A reference to the idiom of losing them, the concept of "tidy marbles" represents the concept of mental resilience. Therapy can help with developing new tools and practices that will mean you can leave the process mentally stronger and more resilient to whatever life holds in future.
